There are few Australian rarities rarer than proof sovereigns. They were not struck every year, and in the years that they were struck, a mintage of three is considered high. These are the crème de la crème of Australian and British numismatics. This 1900-M proof sovereign, photographed above, is one of the more "common" proof issues, with an estimated mintage of three or four pieces. It is stunning and original, with very few marks in the design and only the lightest of die polish in the fields. Naturally, the strike is bold and the design exhibits a fully cameo. Ex-Spink (Australia) March 1988, ex-Nobles March 2000, and ex-Rare Coin Company November 2000. This coin has also been ascribed to the Murdoch and Baldwin collections, although these pedigrees are unverified. Very RARE this nice, and an opportunity to acquire a classic world rarity.
