South Africa, 1923 Pretoria Proof Sovereign -

Vintage proof sovereigns are immensely popular at the moment, with record prices falling for even the more common dates. The proof 1923 South African sovereign has not been immune to these price rises, and continues to be keenly pursued by sovereign collectors. Collectors appreciate its low mintage of 655 pieces, as well as the difficulty of acquiring the coin in superior grade: The average PCGS grade of a 1923SA proof sovereign is 63.85 (8/22). Struck from polished currency-issue dies, the coin is always glossy and eye-catching, but the strike tends to be soft, especially around the horse’s mane. Die polishing lines are sometimes evident in the fields. The coin on offer here, photographed above, is one of the nicer examples we’ve handled in recent years, with clean fields, great presence, and sharp rims. If you’re looking for an example of South Africa’s first and only proof sovereign, this is your coin.

Grades PCGS PR64.
