India, 1835 Two Mohur restrike -

The gold coins of British India are generally a challenge to obtain even in the lower grades. The key coin to the entire series is the 1835 double mohur, with both original coins and official restrikes popular with collectors and investors. As the number of original examples can be counted on two hands, the restrikes, minted officially by the mint in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are an affordable and often preferred alternative. The present coin, photographed above, is the finest 1835 two mohur we’ve handled in ten years, and is one of the nicer pieces to become available in recent times. Visually impactful, the coin is of an earlier strike, and is free from the cross hatching of die polish lines that mar some of the later strikes. It is the equal-second finest graded by PCGS (5/23), and emerged out of India about two years ago; to my knowledge, this coin has never been available on the international market outside of the subcontinent. If you are a collector of large gold coins, British Indian coins, or key international rarities, this imposing coin deserves your consideration.

Grades PCGS PR63.
