Great Britain, 1825 Proof Pattern Two Pound -
Opportunities to acquire rare British gold coins don’t come very often, so when an overseas contact offered us a gold pattern two pound of 1825, we scrambled to make a deal work. That coin, photographed here, is the first of the type we’ve handled, and the equal-finest graded by PCGS in PR62CAM. It is original, with relatively clear fields that are free from fingerprints, major spotting, or hairlines, while the strike is naturally superb. The reverse is tentatively frosted, with perceptible contrasts between the devices and the fields. The number of 1825 £2 pieces minted is not known, but market appearances suggest that fewer than 20 coins must be available, while the Wilson and Rasmussen English Pattern Trial and Proof Coins in Gold suggest that just five pieces are known. Either way, the coin is rare, and an ideal addition to a bespoke investment portfolio or coin collection.
