While hundreds of 1955 proof halfpennies were minted, fewer than 20 proofs dated 1954 were issued. Like the 1955 coin, 1954 proof halfpennies were struck by specially polished dies, which created imperceptible raised lines on the surface of the coin. This is normal for the issue. The present coin, photographed above, is a fully brilliant red example, free from spotting, fingerprints, toning, or other ugly impairments. It’s the first of the date we’ve handled in proof, and one of the nicest we’ve seen on the market in recent years. Equal-second finest graded by PCGS (3/24).
