Fiji, 1940 Proof Halfpenny -
Every Fijian coin aficionado knows that the 1940 halfpenny is the key date, owing to its low mintage of just 24,000 pieces. Fewer collectors are aware that a proof 1940 halfpenny was also minted, and that the number of proof versions of the coin can be counted on perhaps two hands. The coin photographed above is the only example of a 1940 proof halfpenny we’ve handled in the last fourteen years, and is also the only example authenticated and graded by PCGS (4/21). Undervalued in this grade, and a very suitable coin for a Fijian type set, where a Mint State currency coin just won’t do.
