There are a couple of rarer Perth mint sovereigns that fly under the radar. The 1904P and 1911P are two, but so is the 1924P, which is rarer than the much-ballyhooed 1926P sovereign. Just one look at the PCGS population report tells the story: Fewer 1924P sovereigns have been graded overall, and as a group they are in slightly lower average grade (meaning higher grades are harder to find). Examples in PCGS MS64 are particularly rare, with just two examples graded by PCGS in that grade, and none finer (6/20). If you’re in the early stages of building a Perth Mint date set, I would put money on the table that you’re still chasing a 1924. The coin photographed above is an attractive and lustrous example, free from the usual bagmarks that plague lower-grade pieces. Overall, it is an ideal coin for a George V sovereigns set, date set, or even a general sovereign year set.
