There are a number of well-known ultra-rarities in the George V series. Some are more affordable than others, but all are rare. Of the later George V “melt rarities”, the 1923-S sovereign is probably the hardest or second-hardest date (after the million-dollar 1920-S sovereign, of course). It’s more difficult than the popular 1926-S sovereign, in my view, and certainly harder than the 1922-M sovereign. The coin photographed above was sourced from a Singaporean collection, and is only the second example of this date that I’ve had in stock in the last eight years. It’s sharply struck, lustrous, and free from significant bag marks or hairlines. On the whole, it’s an attractive example of this ultra-rare date, and one of the nicest I’ve seen on the market for some time.
