Australia, 1886 Melbourne Shield Sovereign -
Scarce in circulated grades and rare in Mint State, the 1886-M shield sovereign is easily one of the key dates to the entire sovereign series (bettered by only the 1920-S sovereign and a handful of melt rarities from the George V series). This is only the second example of this rarity that I’ve had in stock in any grade since 2011, and one of the nicest I’ve seen on the market to boot. It was sourced out of London during one of my field trips last year, and recently graded up with PCGS at MS61, which isn’t too shabby for such a rare date. Equal-third finest graded by PCGS (10/15), and EXTREMELY RARE this nice. Catalogues $38,000 in aUNC and $70,000 in UNC.
