Australia, 1867 Sydney Mint Sovereign -

Although not one of the rarer dates, the 1867 Sydney Mint sovereign hasn’t been the easiest date to obtain in recent years, especially in PCGS AU58 or Mint State. Unlike the 1866 and 1870, the 1867 is known for a superior strike, and even low Mint State coins generally have a well-struck wreath on the obverse. Some coins exhibit evidence of die clash on the reverse, just above the “VER” of sovereign, as is the case in the coin photographed above. This does not impair the coin’s eye appeal. Overall, if you’re looking to put together an affordable Sydney Mint sovereign set, aim for AU58 or MS61, as coins in MS62 or better are considered superior coins and trade a significant premium.

Grades PCGS MS61.
