I’m stunned at how strongly some of these above-average proofs have performed. Up until about last year, I’d always valued PCGS PR66 1959 florins at around the $600 - $700 mark. In online auctions over the last six months, however, proof 1959 florins in this grade have regularly pushed passed $1,000. I have priced this coin in line with the market. There are only two examples graded finer than the coin photographed above (both in PCGS PR67), and with one of these selling for $10,500 in an online auction in March 2013, my price of $1,450 is a modest price to pay for what is essentially the second-highest grade available for this type. Scarce, with a low mintage of 1,506 pieces.
