Of the many characteristics that catch my eye when I view coins, originality is the most catching of them all. Wether it’s deep, cartwheeling lustre on gold, textured sandstone on copper, or opalescence on silver, originality rates highly in my book. With that perspective in mind, how could I refuse the 1913 florin photographed above when it was offered to me over coffee one afternoon in Sydney? A rare date in its own right, the coin simply glows with character. Clearly in mint state, it would have been a temping target for those nefarious coin dippers amongst us, but, fortunately, it survived the decades untouched and in original condition. A truly exceptional coin, and one of the finest examples of this tough date. Equal-second finest graded by PCGS (6/16).
