Australia, 1897 Melbourne Sovereign -
Like most Veiled head sovereigns, the 1897 Melbourne sovereign is a common date. It can be found in decent Mint State grades, and is reasonably easy to encounter in grades as high as PCGS MS63. As with most Victorian sovereigns, it is scarce in MS64. The date has sometimes appeared in small hoards, with hundreds of pieces graded as one batch in the mid-2000s by PCGS (along with the 1895 Sydney sovereign). These still appear on the market from time-to-time and can be identified by their old PCGS cert numbers. The coin photographed above is the equal-finest of the date (1/22), and is very scarce in this grade.
