Australia, 1891 Sydney Sovereign -

Although the Jubilee head sovereign is often considered the ugliest rendition of the last Hanoverian queen, it belongs to one of the most interesting series of sovereigns. With several varieties available, completing the Jubilee head sovereign series is a challenge to even the most well-heeled collector. It is equally as challenging to assemble a set in high grade, even without the varieties, as the series is known for its baggy, knocked-about coins. Indeed, if you sought to build a set in PCGS MS64, it would not even be possible, let alone affordable, as some dates don’t exist in PCGS MS64. Fortunately, the 1891S sovereign is not one of those dates, although only 55 examples have been certified by PCGS (4/21) across all grades. Very few coins have graded MS63, and just one has made MS64 (photographed above) and one in MS64+. No examples have graded finer. This particular coin comes from an old set registry, and recently came to the market privately. It is the best 1891S sovereign I’ve handled ever, and one of the finest Jubilee head sovereigns I’ve handled overall. Words like “scarce” and “rare” are often bandied about when describing coins, but it is no exaggeration when I use it to describe this coin. If you’re looking to build a superior Jubilee head sovereign set, this coin is essential.

Grades PCGS MS64.
