Australia, 1926 Sydney Sovereign -

It is well-documented that the roaring twenties was a traumatic era for the gold sovereign. As world war and economic ructions threatened the very existence of the gold standard, mints the world over were steadily withdrawing and melting their gold coinage. The fabled sovereign, which had circulated since 1817 but has roots going back to 1489, did not escape this fate. Nevertheless, the mass meltings of the 1920s birthed what are now the sovereign rarities of the 2020s, with some coins so rare they are coveted by Egyptian kings and world bank presidents. The present coin, photographed above, was minted in Sydney in 1926, and is one of what is believed to be about fifty coins of the date that survived the carnage of the meltings. As a numismatic item, the coin is bold, well-struck, and lustrous, with superior eye appeal and presence. There is a smattering of aberrations about the fields, consistent with the grade, and a small edge knock on the obverse at eleven o’clock mentioned for accuracy. On the whole, if you’re a serious collector seeking an affordable example of the last sovereign minted on Macquarie St, Sydney, this is your coin.
