Australia, 1922/1 Overdate Threepence -
There are a number of rarities across the Commonwealth coin series. Amongst the most popular are the 1930 penny, 1923 halfpenny, and 1922/1 overdate threepence. The two copper coins on that list appear frequently on the market, but the latter—the threepence—is scarcely available in problem-free grade. Indeed, almost all known 1922/1 overdates are heavily circulated and exhibit faults like edge knocks, deep hairlines, punch marks, and bending. The present coin, photographed above, is free from these issues: Its rims are intact, its surfaces are mostly clear, and “Advance Australia” on the reverse is practically complete. From Noble Numismatic auction November 2018, where the auctioneer described the coin as a recent find in an old hoard of silver coins.
