Australia, 1918 Perth Half Sovereign -
I don’t often get a 1918-P half sovereign in stock, but when I do it’s worth putting together a small write-up. Most Australian gold coin collectors know the stats: The number of pieces in existence today is 100 to 250 specimens; it’s the key date of the George V half sovereign series and the half sovereign series overall; it’s rarer than the 1930 penny, 1923 half penny, 1922/21 overdate, and most modern proof sets and mint sets; PCGS has graded 16 examples in grades better than MS61, with only one in MS62+ (May 2013). I get the 1918-P half sovereign in stock once or twice a year in Mint State, and they tend to appear in auction only a handful of times over any twelve month period. This date is rare, no doubt about it, and for a collector looking to acquire a coin with the perfect combination of genuine rarity and high grade, this is your coin.
