Australia, 1888 Melbourne Sovereign -
S-3867A, with first obverse and angled JEB. (This variety is described as "IEB" in the McDonald catalogue.) Of the two 1888-M sovereign varieties, this example, where the tip of the crown overlaps the edge denticles, is the rarest. The piece photographed above is the equal finest-graded by PCGS (6/20), and superior to the example in the Quartermaster Collection. It is also the finest example I’ve handled since 2007. RARE in this grade, and an essential piece to the Jubilee Head Varieties Set on the PCGS Set Registry. Read more about Jubilee head sovereign varieties here.
