Australia, 1883 Melbourne Shield Reverse Sovereign -
The fourth or fifth rarest date of the shield series, and the single-finest 1883-M shield sovereign graded by PCGS in this grade (April 2013). Being such a rare coin, it’s difficult to value. The best comparable I could find is the example from the 2009 Quartermaster auction. At the time, I had examined the coin during the pre-sale viewing and estimated its grade to be around MS62 or MS63. After spirited bidding between gold dealers, the coin eventually sold for $12,660 with commission. The new owner of the above coin will possess one of the finest examples of this rare date currently on the market, and one of the better shield sovereigns I have seen overall.
